Preload

Install an application called prefetch which preloads commonly used files.

It may take a few days for the program to learn your preferences so be patient. soon you will notice a significant boost in speed for your most commonly used applications.

Note: Prefetch has been renamed to preload


sudo apt-get install preload

TMPRAM

If you have a lot of RAM you can store your /tmp folder within RAM,

sudo nano /etc/fstab

add this line to the bottom

 none /tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0

WARNING THIS WILL BREAK SUSPEND

Use the Google Public DNS servers

Add the Google public DNS servers to your resolv.conf by doing

sudo echo nameserver 8.8.8.8 >> /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base &&sudo echo nameserver 8.8.4.4 >> /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base && sudo service networking restart
